Legacies and Family History

Recently Lensmaster Willow contacted me and asked if I would like to be interviewed for her Squidoo Spotlight lens. As I answered her very probing questions, it got me thinking about some of what Squidoo means to me. But Willow also asked a question about my very diverse range of topics, which triggered a new train of thought about my lenses…..

I have posted about some of what Squidoo means to me before, so I won’t go over that again but recently I have thought about the legacy we Lensmasters are leaving. Not only are we leaving footprints all over the internet as we publish lenses, blog about them and make comments on other blogs, if you are anything like me and write about things that affect you perosnally, then you are leaving LEGACY to your family. Not only that, you are leaving a valuable resource to anyone who is researching your family history.

My lenses are full of family stories. I even managed to add a personal story into one of my newest lenses: Making perfect gravy.

This is yet another reason to take extra care with those lenses. Make them the best you can and at times you might want to be careful what you say. You never know who may be reading them in 50 years time!!

Funny, I’ve had similar thoughts. When I was carrying my first child I considered starting a diary/journal for him which never got past the first few entries. Now with blogs and Squidoo lenses it has become much easier and more fun to document family history. I’ve even started my first-grader on his own blog and he gets a kick out of it every time one of his teachers or relatives visit and leave comments. This will get more mileage than a diary, I’m sure.

I’m far more aware of what I put on the web these days. It’s very easy for people to read the good AND the bad. And it’s there to stay in many cases. My kids are also starting to get involved with blogs. I think it’s a good idea for parents to let kids blog so that they can teach them what they should NOT put out there. Just another aspect of parenting that our parents didn’t have to think about.

I agree with your article completely. I take that legacy very serious whenever I write online. All my squidoo lenses reflect who I am and a strong family bond that is connected to history. For example how we were affected by the Great Depression of the 1930’s http://www.squidoo.com/the-great-depression-era—1930s

    Thanks for a great blog.

I haven’t done any lenses specifically about family stories (other than Polly’s Pancake Parlor) but every time I think of a story, I think gee I should do a lens on that…

I guess that’s one of the things you look at differently when you don’t have kids (like me). I just put up some family history on my new Christianity lensography, but without kids who can look at that later, I was just thinking of my general audience (and not sure they’d be at all interested).

Those RocketMoms lenses look so great! I have to confess that I have never made homemade gravy from scratch. I make all kinds of sauces for things but I’ve not done gravy. With your help maybe I’ll make the leap!
