Day 17 of the Lens Experiment and things are getting clearer!

Once again backlinks on Lose weight on a wheat free diet are increasing faster than traffic but hopefully this will mean that I will get a higher ranking on Google soon. I ran through the first 30 pages (how sad is that?) looking for the lens under the search phrase lose weight on a wheat free diet and once again only the Squidtop blogs showed up on pages 2 and 4. Spirituality’s blog showed up on Zimbio on page 15 and THAT lens that I blogged about yesterday showed up on Page 15.

After the comment I made about not lensrolling what I consider to be a poor lens, Katinka made some interesting observations on her latest Squidtop blog “a wrong SEO assumption, which got me wondering if there is anything such as a bad backlink. I have posted the question on her blog…..

Lens Stats for February 05 2009 (Previous day in brackets)
Visits: 101 (95)
Star ratings: Average 5, rated by 37 (36) people
Lensrank: 883 (800)
Backlinks: 255 (227) from 9 (7) domains
Angel blessings: 3
The highest ranking so far: 800

The backlinks are increasing and there’s some domains I have not spotted before. My Squidmates Poddys and Debnet have started a new blog and I left a comment on there last week. So the value of commenting on other blogs is clearly being demonstrated. Not that I left the comment JUST to get a backlink!

So, to Lose weight with a wheat free diet. I did a load of tweaking this afternoon. I had spotted that in the searches I am doing that includes the phrase wheat free, it was also returning the expression wheat-free, that I had not been using. In AJ’s book of grammar there is no hyphen. But hey, I want to get traffic so I guess a liitle bit of easing up on my grammar rules is definitely in order.

The tweaking I did was very boring, but it had to be done. It remains to be seen if it will help me get found by Google. Most of the things I did was look in modules that had the phrase wheat free more than once and so I changed some of them to wheat-free – adding the hyphen. I also added the phrase wheat free and wheat-free to other modules, being very careful not to over do it!

However, the biggest error I think I have made so far was that although my key phrase (wheat free diet, just in case you had not realised!) appeared in the title it did not appear in the text of my intro module – Doh! Doh! and Doh! What a twit!

The other change I made was to the title of the Intro module. The lens title is Losing weight with a wheat free diet. The module title was Lose weight with a wheat free diet but I have now changed it to Lose weight on a wheat-free diet. So I have saved the updates and pinged the lens – am now holding my breath…

As for the fog of yesterday, I think my thoughts are getting clearer about what I need to do but it is going to take some juggling!

AJ, I hope you’ll roll all you learn into a lens when your experiment’s done.

It’s funny how just small changes can make a huge difference. Takes time to investigate though, but I think if you make notes of the SEO rules you need to apply, then for each lens in your collection you can do the studying, apply the changes, and wait for the results.

Of course making changes may cause the lens to drop in Google for a few days beforeit rebounds. That happened with my Song Lyrics YMCA lens, eventhough I didn’t change the key module titles or keywords. Still, despite having been pretty much dropped by Google, the group that it is in is still at the top of the list when you search. The traffic is therefore coming in, although I can’t wait for Google to pick it up again.

Well it looks as if you are doing ok with this lens AJ, lensrank is under 900 so you can’t complain about that, although if things get better and the traffic really builds then the money could also come in from affiliate links.

Wishing you luck, and thanks so much for the mention on our blog. I keep wanting to write some more articles about lenses we like, SEO tricks etc, but haven’t yet found the time. I will do this as soon as I can…

The process you’re going through is very helpful, for you and everyone else. I have to laugh when you mention that the tweaking process is “boring”. I often think that the creation of a lens, a hub or whatever, is the fun part but the “boring” part is the other 70% of the process of promoting and tweaking. I just have to remind myself I’m learning and THAT is exciting (at least a little bit).

Do vary the way you are linking to your lens. No harm in sometimes only using the words ‘wheat free diet’ or ‘losing weight’ in the link text. Be lazy about it – it’s human. Google is looking out for signs that you are trying to influence the algorithm.

BTW: there is good reason to think that only the first link to a page counts. So linking to it three times in one post is not likely going to help.

Have you started that losing weight group yet?

Oh – as for the introduction module – I would ALWAYS change the order of the keywords compared to the title.

So in the title you have ‘Losing weight with a wheat free diet’

Make the subtitle start with wheat free diet. For instance ‘wheat free dieting tips’. Ads the verb and the word ‘tips’ as keywords and looks more natural.
