My First Squidtop Post Ever!

I joined Squidoo on July 14 2008, which is when I published my first lens about Janey Lee Grace, a BBC Radio Presenter, who I had met just a few days previously. Since then I have been trying to absorb all the “How to Squidoo” info I can, to not only try to make some good lenses but also satisfy my passion to write. At the same time I have been publishing lenses as I go and I am very proud that my lens on Bullying made it into the top 2000 lenses, within a week of being published.

I will be very honest, as although I love to write I am also looking at ways of earning an income from home as due to a sometimes debillitating condition, I am currently unable to work. I am able to use the computer though, so perhaps “someone” has decided it is time that I made full use of my creativity, writing skills and ability to research. Squidoo seems ideal!

Not only am I new to Squidoo but I am very new to Blogging. However, because I am a “compulsive communicator”, I suppose I am surprised I did not start blogging a long time ago.

I think I have two main “niches” where I fit in and they are “Parenting” (with four children I have a bit of experience in that direction and “Environment” from a family persepctive. However, that does not mean to say that I won’t be distracted by other topics, that catch my attention as my lens list testifies.

The whole thing is a steep learning curve for me. Although very “IT literate” (I had not even heard of Wordpress until a few weeks ago) I am still struggling to get my head around RSS feeds and Trackbacks. Although I have been working my way through various lenses about this, sad to say that even with my IT Brain, I am having trouble understanding the whole concept and the process. So, if someone has an “Idiot’s Step by Step Guide to RSS Feeds and Trackbacks” they can refer me to, I would be very grateful. Or, once I do manage to master it, perhaps I should write a lens!

However, one thing I am getting used to is HTML and widgets and gradually incorporating more in my lenses.

The ethos of the Squidoo Community as being a place where people help each other suits me down to the ground. I have already had some lovely messages from some brilliant Lensmasters and am still trying to get used to the fact that these people are actually reading what I publish! I feel privileged to be part of this Community.

    Welcome aboard.

Many of us are pretty new to Wordpress, it is very different to other software, the interface and terminology are different, but you will get used to it. Once you do, it’s not too hard to create your own blogs in Wordpress, but I agree things like RSS still somewhat confuse me. It’s the way of the future though, so you had better try and understand it :)

I have to admit that being able to add RSS into a lens that shows the latest news headlines etc is very cool.

Good Luck with your lenses, I have then marked to look at tonight. I didn’t look at much that I bookmarked for last night, so it might be over the weekend…

Good to have you with us.
    Tony
